Hugo de Vries, based on his work on evening primrose, proposed that mutations are the cause of evolution. He believed that mutations are random and directionless, whereas Darwinian variations are small and directional. De Vries argued that evolution is caused by sudden large mutations (saltation), rather than gradual accumulation of small variations .
