Crossing over occurs during the pachytene stage of Prophase I in meiosis. This stage is characterised by the appearance of recombination nodules, the sites at which crossing over occurs between non-sister chromatids of the homologous chromosomes . It is an enzyme-mediated process involved in the recombination of genetic material .
