Taylor and colleagues performed experiments on Vicia faba (faba beans) in 1958 involving the use of radioactive thymidine to detect the distribution of newly synthesised DNA in the chromosomes. This proved that DNA in chromosomes also replicates semiconservatively. In contrast, Meselson and Stahl experimented on E. coli to prove semi-conservative replication of DNA.
