Pollen grains are remarkably well-preserved as fossils due to the presence of sporopollenin in their hard outer layer, the exine. Sporopollenin is one of the most resistant organic materials known; it can withstand high temperatures as well as strong acids and alkalies, and no known enzyme can degrade it .
