Silicones are a group of organosilicon polymers, which have $(R_2SiO)$ as a repeating unit. They are characterised by high thermal stability, high dielectric strength, and resistance to oxidation and chemicals. Crucially, they are biocompatible (non-toxic and do not trigger an immune response) and water-repellent. Due to these properties, silicones find extensive use in surgical implants for cosmetic surgery, as well as in sealants, greases, and electrical insulators.
