The chain length of the silicone polymer can be controlled by adding trimethylchlorosilane, $(CH_3)_3SiCl$. Upon hydrolysis, it forms trimethylsilanol, $(CH_3)_3SiOH$, which contains only one condensable hydroxyl group. It acts as a chain-terminating unit by capping the ends of the polymerizing chain, thus stopping further growth.
