Mitochondria are the sites of aerobic respiration. They produce cellular energy in the form of ATP by oxidizing respiratory substrates (such as carbohydrates), hence they are called 'power houses' of the cell . Chloroplasts are responsible for trapping light energy to synthesize organic compounds (photosynthesis) , while ribosomes are the sites of protein synthesis , and lysosomes contain hydrolytic enzymes for digestion .
