Double fertilisation is a unique characteristic feature of angiosperms, also known as flowering plants . It consists of two separate fusion events: syngamy, where one male gamete fuses with the egg cell to form a diploid zygote, and triple fusion, where the second male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei in the central cell to produce a triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN) .
